Leo

The evening passed slowly as everyone on board was concerned about Benedict and what illness we’d brought on the ship with him. Some of the men complained, but Barnabas had a strong hold on them and he was able to sooth them into submission.

I worried about Lydia, as she seemed as if she were on the verge of collapsing, but wouldn’t stop her vigil for his safety.

As I watched her in the small space she'd huddled into, I felt sorry for her. Here she was, far from home and alone. The man she'd relied on was ill and she was lost without him. It surprised me I wasn't jealous. When she shared her wounds over her mother's death in childbirth, I realized Benedict was most likely the only person who'd ever been a true friend to her. Someday, I hoped to be a dear friend to her as well.

It was full dark now and my favorite time of day onboard ship. The stars were clear and the air was full of sea salt and a perfect breeze was blowing over us.

The grumbling of Barnabas' men caused me some concern that made my enjoyment of the stars pale.

I stepped over to Lydia and knelt beside her. "We need to get you to your cabin."

"It's so hot down there."

"I know, but the men are getting restless. They don't like women on board on a regular day. The fact that an ill man accompanied you is making them even more agitated. I think it's best to get you out of sight for a while."

"The ship I came to Jamaica on had a number of women passengers. I had no idea the men would be upset."

"Much as I hate to say it, you weren't on a privateer ship then."

Her hands flew to her mouth. "Oh no. Are we going to pillage some unsuspecting vessel?"

"No. I assured that when I paid our passage." I held my arm out. "Let's go below."

She allowed me to help her up and walk with her to the stairs. I sensed eyes on us and so urged her to move a bit faster.

"Speaking of our passage, I must arrange to repay you."

"We can discuss it later." I had no intention in taking any of her funds. I had no idea how she was situated and didn't want to burden her with another expense.

"Be sure we will."

I was starting to recognize that stubborn set of her jaw. I nodded as it was better to placate her for the moment while we were at the mercy of Barnabas' crew. "All right."

We'd arrived at the door to her quarters. "Before I go in, will you see how Benedict is doing? I'll sleep better if I know he's resting."

How could I resist her plea? "I will. I'll knock when I have news."

"Thank you."

When she was safely in her cabin, I opened the door to what was supposed to be my own and whispered across the space, "Benedict? It's Leo. Lydia wanted me to check in on you.
